WASHINGTON, D.C. — Roberto García, president of the Medicaid and Medicare Advantage Products Association of Puerto Rico (MMAPA), a non-profit organization composed of the leading Medicaid and Medicare Advantage organizations in Puerto Rico, issued the following statement today on the outcome of the U.S. presidential election.
“We congratulate President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris on their victory in the 2020 election. MMAPA is encouraged by their past statements on the importance of parity in federal health care investments, and we look forward to working with the incoming administration and the new Congress to develop and implement comprehensive, long-term solutions that address the long-standing underfunding of Medicaid and Medicare Advantage in Puerto Rico.
“MMAPA member companies insure nearly two million people under the Medicaid and Medicare Advantage programs in Puerto Rico. Together, these programs finance more than three-quarters of Puerto Rico’s health system, but federal funding levels for these programs are lower on the island than in any state in the nation. Moreover, Congress funds Puerto Rico’s health care programs on a short-term basis, regularly jeopardizing these Americans’ access to care and creating added instability in a health care system that is already stretched thin. It is imperative to address these systemic issues, and we are heartened that both the President-Elect and the Vice President-Elect have previously indicated their willingness to do so.”
